In Ground Rain Water Filter Pit with Junk Basket

In Ground Filter Pits are designed to handle large volumes of rainwater that capture large debris at a central point in your rain harvesting system. In some cases they can be safer and easier to clean than other debris filters.

  • The Junk Basket is INCLUDED
  • 22 x 22 x 22inches or 27.6 x 27.6 x 27.6inches
  • Includes an inspect proof screen
  • Made from durable polypropylene
  • Risers are also available to extend the height of the Filter Pit

Downspout Filter Pit

Includes Junk Basket.

In some instances it is not practical to place downspout filters along the downspout or on a wall to pre-filter water headed for the water tank. In Ground Filter Pits enable screening to be done at a pit which can be safer and easier to clean.

Filter Pits are extremely beneficial when used in conjunction with underground tanks or where tanks are placed downhill from the building. They are usually placed at a convenient spot in the garden, part way between the building and the tank and are a ‘junction’ where the pipes from around the house meet, and from which the main pipe/s then connect to the storage tank. They handle large volumes of water and come standard with a 1mm insect proof stainless steel screen and junk basket which incorporates a 6mm stainless steel screen.

Filter Pits require a fall between the building and the top of the tank of at least 750mm depending on the distance of the pipe run between where the pipe enters the ground at the building and the tank. This system will enable the pipes to be connected directly into the wall of the tank which leaves the top of the tank free for other uses.

Importantly, it eliminates the need for a tank screen on top of the tank. This prevents contamination of the tank water via the tank screen and reduces the amount of sunlight entering the tank thus minimising the growth of algae and other bacteria.

Water Diverter/s should be installed down stream of the Filter Pit to prevent the first, most contaminated water, from entering the tank. Fine sediments may pass through the screen of the Filter Pit, and a Water Diverter will further improve water quality.

Installation Instructions:

Filter Pit Systems require a fall between the building and the top of the tank of at least 750mm depending on the distance of the pipe run between where the pipe enters the ground at the building and the tank.

It is important with this system to keep the pipes as close to the top of the ground, at the building, as practicable so as to minimise the depth that the pipe will have to be by the time it reaches the tank, so that a constant fall is retained.

  • 1. Drill hole/s as close to the top of the Filter Pit as possible to take the inlet pipes.
  • 2. Fit a 45 degree bend to the pipe so as to direct the water flow into the first third of the screen.
  • 3. Seal the pipes on the outside with a suitable sealant.
  • 4. Drill the outlet hole/s flush with the bottom of the Filter Pit so that the Filter Pit drains out completely after rain.
  • 5. Seal the pipe on both sides of the Filter Pit before back filling.
Important: Make sure that the finished level of the pit prevents surface water entering.

If required risers (height extensions) are available to increase the height of the top of the pit.
